LOSERS.</h3>I see Alabama as that&nbsp;house with a crowded table, where there is always one more chair, so everyone has a seat at that table, where there is always room by the fire, always a place for everyone.Where the door is open, and yes — we’re all a little different — but nobody gets turned away.Where we belong to one another, flaws and all.

Doug attended the University of Alabama, where he earned his undergraduate degree before going on to graduate from Samford University’s Cumberland School of Law. From the beginning of his career, he was drawn to public service. He served as staff counsel to U.S. Senator Howell Heflin on the Senate Judiciary Committee, gaining firsthand experience in the legislative process and working on issues affecting Alabama families. After his time in Washington, Doug returned home to Alabama to practice law, staying rooted in the communities that shaped&nbsp;him.

Education

For too long, Alabama has suffered from an array of office holders who have become embarrassments to our state and cast a shadow on the good people of Alabama. We can do better.

Doug’s commitment to justice led him to serve as United States Attorney for the Northern District of Alabama. In that role, he took on some of the most difficult and consequential cases in the state’s history. Most notably, decades after the tragic 1963 bombing of the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church in Birmingham that killed four young girls, Doug reopened the case and successfully prosecuted two former Ku Klux Klan members responsible for the crime.

<h3>I’m running to give the people of Alabama something too many politicians in Montgomery don’t want you to have: a&nbsp;choice.</h3>When politicians stay in power by keeping you out of the process… When they stack the deck… When they cling to one-party rule…They’re not serving Alabama — they’re serving themselves. Two-thirds of Alabamians believe their state government doesn’t really care what they think. And I have to ask you — is anyone here surprised? If Montgomery truly cared what the people thought, we would already have:<ul><li>Expanded Medicaid, so our neighbors wouldn’t be living with the highest rates of diabetes and heart disease in the nation, and our rural hospitals wouldn’t be shutting their doors.</li><li>Taken every measure possible to protect families, so Alabama wouldn’t earn an “F” on maternal health from the March of Dimes — think of that, this self-proclaimed “pro-life” state earning an “F” in caring for mothers.</li><li>Protected IVF and contraception. It started with abortion, but make no mistake — those folks never planned on stopping there.</li><li>Early voting, like 47 other states that trust their citizens.</li><li>Eliminated the straight-ticket ballot, a system designed to keep the powerful in power, even as they fail us year after year.</li><li>A state lottery, instead of watching millions bleed across our borders to Florida and Georgia.</li></ul>We must give the people of Alabama a choice and a vision.

Throughout his career — as a prosecutor, a private attorney, and a United States Senator — Doug Jones has focused on fairness, accountability, and opportunity. He has built his life around serving Alabama: fighting for justice in the courtroom, delivering practical solutions in the Senate, and standing up for working families across the state.

In 2017, Doug made history by becoming the first Democrat elected to the United States Senate from Alabama in a quarter-century. His victory reflected a broad coalition of Alabamians who believed in decency, bipartisanship, and putting people over politics. During his time in office, Doug helped pass bipartisan legislation that created jobs and supported economic development in Alabama, including measures to strengthen small businesses and promote workforce training. He supported efforts to expand access to broadband in rural communities, recognizing its importance for education, health care, and economic growth. Doug worked to protect and restore veterans’ benefits, advocating for improved health services and resources for Alabama’s large veteran population. He backed funding for infrastructure projects critical to the state’s ports, roads, and waterways, helping position Alabama for long-term growth.

He did not pull the trigger that killed the victim, while the life of the man who did pull the trigger was spared in a plea bargain, and he spent his life in prison. BIRMINGHAM, AL – Today, Doug Jones issued the following statement regarding the latest legislative effort to change the Alabama Public Service Commission through a Senate substitute for HB 475 which overwhelmingly passed the State House:“If you want to see a con job, watch what's happening in the Alabama legislature about the Public Service Commission. Rep. Mack Butler's HB 475 that passed the House was a good bill. For the first time in over 40 years, Alabamians had a real chance to get a formal rate case where power companies would have to justify their rates in public. When that bill got to the Senate, Republican leadership not only gutted the requirement of a rate case from HB 475 but added their PSC packing plan to increase the PSC from 3 to 7 members with Governor Ivey appointing four seats this summer before the election. The substitute would also effectively put control of the PSC in the hands of a non-elected “energy secretary” also appointed by the governor.&nbsp;Now, Republicans are trying to ram this bill, which is HB 475 in name only, through the legislature before the Alabama people realize what's going on. Why? Because the utility companies are pulling the strings. Our legislature should not be working to protect powerful interests, but working families whose utility rates are much too high. We have an election coming up in which 2 PSC seats will be on the ballot. Republicans and Democrats are competing in their respective primaries to be the candidates on the ballot in November. We need to elect the PSC this fall and let the newly elected members of the PSC try and right this ship.If we are serious about lowering costs, we need transparency and accountability. This bill, as it stands now, does not make the Public Service Commission more transparent and accountable. Instead it is just a con job on the people of Alabama that preserves the ability of special interests to control your power bills and their profits. This should not be a partisan issue. I urge all Alabama citizens to join me in asking the legislature to defeat this con job."

What this means: A government that answers to people — not insiders — with real transparency and accountability. Doug’s plan would ban elected officials from trading individual stocks while in office, promote citizen-led ballot initiatives and referendums, expand early voting, end practices that weaken accountability, and empower local communities to solve local issues.

The Trump Administration has now taken the weaponization of the Department of Justice and the FBI to levels we have never seen.For more than 50 years, the SPLC has been on the front lines of fighting hate and securing justice for individuals and communities without the means to secure that justice for themselves. The SPLC’s work in legal battles such as that of Michael Donald, a 19 year old Black man who was lynched by the Klan in Mobile in 1981, did not just achieve a courtroom victory but literally dismantled the KKK here in Alabama.In many cases, efforts to expose and stop extremist violence have relied on gathering information from within these groups, whether the KKK in Alabama or other modern white supremacist groups. These are necessary tools that have been used to protect civil rights in this country and were more often than not shared with law enforcement, including the FBI. It is the same information gathering tactics used by the FBI everyday to take down drug cartels and extremist organizations.Now we are watching the Trump Administration weaponize the Justice Department to target those organizations who have been on the front lines protecting civil rights.
