Doug Jones: Alabama Cannot Be “Ground Zero” for the Rollback of Voting Rights

Birmingham, AL – Standing in front of the Martin Luther King Jr. statue in Kelly Ingram Park, Doug Jones marked the 63rd anniversary of the March on Washington and called on Alabamians to continue the fight for voting rights and equal representation.

Jones reflected on the progress won in the years following the march, as Black Americans fought to dismantle Jim Crow amid political violence. He warned that many of those hard-won rights are now being threatened.

“Today, so much of that is being rolled back, and ground zero for all of it was right here in Alabama,” Jones said. “We cannot let Alabama be ground zero for the rollback once again. We have got to do everything possible to protect voting rights and make sure everybody has a seat at the table.”

Jones urged Alabamians to honor the sacrifices of those who came before them by continuing their fight.

“It is up to us now to move this country forward and make sure everyone has a seat at the table and democracy not only survives, but thrives,” Jones said. “Let’s remember today, and let’s march forward.”
