From the beginning of his career, he was drawn to public service. He served as staff counsel to U.S. Senator Howell Heflin on the Senate Judiciary Committee, gaining firsthand experience in the legislative process and working on issues affecting Alabama families. After his time in Washington, Doug returned home to Alabama to practice law, staying rooted in the communities that shaped&nbsp;him.</strong></span></p>

<p>Doug’s commitment to justice led him to serve as United States Attorney for the Northern District of Alabama. In that role, he took on some of the most difficult and consequential cases in the state’s history. Most notably, decades after the tragic 1963 bombing of the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church in Birmingham that killed four young girls, Doug reopened the case and successfully prosecuted two former Ku Klux Klan members responsible for the crime.</p>

<h4><span style="color: var(--color-text); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text);">I’m running to give the people of Alabama something too many politicians in Montgomery don’t want you to have: a&nbsp;choice.</span></h4><p>When politicians stay in power by keeping you out of the process…<br>When they stack the deck…<br>When they cling to one-party rule…</p><p>They’re not serving Alabama — they’re serving themselves. <strong>Two-thirds of Alabamians believe their state government doesn’t really care what they think.</strong> And I have to ask you — is anyone here surprised? If Montgomery truly cared what the people thought, we would already have:</p><ul><li><p><strong>Expanded Medicaid</strong>, so our neighbors wouldn’t be living with the highest rates of diabetes and heart disease in the nation, and our rural hospitals wouldn’t be shutting their doors.</p></li><li><p><strong>Taken every measure possible to protect families</strong>,<strong> </strong>so<strong> </strong>Alabama wouldn’t earn an “F” on maternal health from the March of Dimes — think of that, this self-proclaimed “pro-life” state earning an “F” in caring for mothers.</p></li><li><p><strong>Protected IVF and contraception. </strong>It started with abortion, but make no mistake — those folks never planned on stopping there.</p></li><li><p><strong>Early voting</strong>, like 47 other states that trust their citizens.</p></li><li><p><strong>Eliminated the straight-ticket ballot</strong>, a system designed to keep the powerful in power, even as they fail us year after year.</p></li><li><p><strong>A state lottery</strong>, instead of watching millions bleed across our borders to Florida and Georgia.</p></li></ul><p><strong>We must give the people of Alabama a choice and a vision.</strong></p>

<p>Throughout his career — as a prosecutor, a private attorney, and a United States Senator — Doug Jones has focused on<strong> fairness, accountability, and opportunity.</strong> He has built his life around serving Alabama: fighting for justice in the courtroom, delivering practical solutions in the Senate, and standing up for working families across the state.</p>

<h4>Doug Jones slams Tuberville’s Muslim remarks at MLK gala, warns civil rights are at risk</h4>

<p>BIRMINGHAM, AL – Today, Doug Jones issued the following statement regarding the passage of House Bill 541 by the Alabama House of Representatives.</p><p>“Once again, Republicans in the Alabama legislature are attempting to rig elections by denying Alabama citizens the right to vote in the political primary of their choice. This morning, the Republican supermajority in the Alabama House passed HB 541, which strips over 300,000 Alabamians of their right to participate in political primaries. I applaud the Alabama House Democratic Caucus for standing united against this bill.</p><p>Political primaries are funded by taxpayer dollars. Independent voters are not just important in general elections. They are an important constituency in primary elections as a moderating check on both political parties. This is especially significant in a state that is as politically gerrymandered as Alabama. If HB 541 passes the Senate and is signed into law, over 300,000 Alabamians will either have to face a choice: register with a political party or be denied the ability to vote in a taxpayer funded primary for President or any federal or state office. That is just plain wrong.</p><p>Alabama already has one of the lowest voter participation rates in the country — only 22% in the 2022 general election and even less in the primaries — and now the Republican supermajority seems hellbent on sinking that participation rate even further.</p><p>We need more participation in elections, not less. House and Senate Democrats are trying to deliver with several bills that encourage civic engagement, such as early in person voting and ballot initiatives. But the Republican leadership in the Alabama legislature will not even give those bills a hearing, much less a vote.</p><p>I am calling all Alabamians to call or write their state senator and urge them to defeat HB541.”</p>

<p>"If you want to see a con job, watch what's happening in the Alabama legislature about the Public Service Commission. Rep. Mack Butler's HB 475 that passed the House was a good bill. For the first time in over 40 years, Alabamians had a real chance to get a formal rate case where power companies would have to justify their rates in public. When that bill got to the Senate, Republican leadership not only gutted the requirement of a rate case from HB 475 but added their PSC packing plan to increase the PSC from 3 to 7 members with Governor Ivey appointing four seats this summer before the election. The substitute would also effectively put control of the PSC in the hands of a non-elected “energy secretary” also appointed by the governor."</p>

<p>BIRMINGHAM, AL – Doug Jones, Democratic nominee for governor, released the following statement regarding the Supreme Court's 5-4 decision upholding Mississippi's grace period for late-arriving mail-in ballots:</p><p><br></p><p>"This week, the same Supreme Court that gutted the Voting Rights Act earlier this year rejected Republicans' most recent attempt to make voting harder for Americans. By a narrow 5-4 margin, the Court allowed the counting of mail-in ballots postmarked by but received after Election Day. I am relieved by the Court's decision, but this is not the time to celebrate.</p><p></p><p>Mail-in voting is a secure method used by college students away from home, senior citizens, and service members stationed overseas, but for years, many extreme Republicans, including Senator Tuberville, have lied about mail-in voting security because they want to undermine confidence in our elections. As we approach the November election, I have no doubt that their attempts to silence your voices will intensify.&nbsp;</p><p></p><p>This time, the rule of law prevailed. <p>BIRMINGHAM, AL – Doug Jones joined MSNOW's "The Weekend Primetime" Sunday evening to make the case that Alabama is in play. The conversation covered Tommy Tuberville's record in the Senate, the residency questions following his opponent, Medicaid expansion, and what the May primary numbers are telling Alabama Democrats about November.</p><p>On Tuberville's six years in Washington, Jones was clear. "He consistently embarrasses the state," Jones said. "He has not had any major legislation at all that helps the state of Alabama or the country, for that matter."</p><p>On why voters across the state are paying attention, Jones pointed to what people are feeling at home. "People are hurting. People are seeing their gas prices, their electricity prices, their grocery prices, health care — all of that is on the table," he noted.</p><p>When host Elise Jordan asked whether his campaign would formally challenge Tuberville's eligibility under Alabama's residency requirements, Jones was clear that his campaign would not be leading that fight — but made no mistake about the reality on the ground.</p><p>"Everybody in Alabama knows he's really not a resident of the state of Alabama," Jones said. "He spends his time on the beach down in northern Florida. That's where he is. That's where he stays. That's where he lives."</p><p>On Medicaid, Jones pointed to a decades-long failure of leadership in Montgomery. "We've not had a governor or even any statewide officeholder that has been a champion of expanding Medicaid," Jones added. He committed to making it a day-one priority under his administration, calling it long overdue for rural communities across the state.</p><p>On momentum, the May 19th primary numbers told their own story. Democratic ballots doubled compared to 2022, while Republican turnout dropped by 25% despite millions spent on contested primary races. <p>BIRMINGHAM, AL – Today, Doug Jones issued the following statement regarding Governor Kay Ivey's decision to commute Charles ‘Sonny’ Burton’s death sentence to life without parole on Tuesday March 10, 2026.</p><p>“As governor, you often have to make hard choices, and I am thankful Governor Ivey commuted the death sentence of Sonny Burton to life in prison without parole,” Jones said. “Mr Burton is now 75 years old, frail and has spent more than three decades in prison. He did not pull the trigger that killed the victim, while the life of the man who did pull the trigger was spared in a plea bargain, and he spent his life in prison. Members of the victim’s family and the jury who sentenced Mr. Burton to death asked the Governor to commute his death sentence. Governor Ivey tempering justice with mercy was the right decision.”</p>

<p>BIRMINGHAM, AL – Today, Doug Jones issued the following statement urging Governor Kay Ivey and the Alabama Legislature to provide immediate relief to Alabama families by temporarily suspending the state gasoline excise tax, following similar action in Georgia:</p><p>“I am calling on Governor Ivey and the Alabama Legislature to act now and pass a 60 to 90 day suspension of Alabama’s gas tax, similar to the action taken in Georgia this past week.</p><p>Alabama families were already struggling to make ends meet before being hit with the dramatic escalating costs at the gas pump that we are seeing now. This is one area where state leaders can make an immediate difference in people’s lives as travel plans are increasing for spring break and Easter.</p><p>Suspending the state’s $0.30 gas tax and $0.31 diesel fuel tax for just 60 days would put over $100 million back into the pockets of hardworking Alabamians. If Georgia can act to give its citizens relief, Alabama can too. Governor Ivey and the legislature should act immediately.”</p>

These are necessary tools that have been used to protect civil rights in this country and were more often than not shared with law enforcement, including the FBI. It is the same information gathering tactics used by the FBI everyday to take down drug cartels and extremist organizations.</p><p>Now we are watching the Trump Administration weaponize the Justice Department to target those organizations who have been on the front lines protecting civil rights. <p>Eutaw, AL – Doug Jones, the Democratic nominee for governor, kicked off his statewide Town Hall Tour in Greene County on Wednesday by taking unscreened questions from Alabama voters about rural hospitals, Medicaid, voting rights, education, housing costs, and the economy.&nbsp;</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Nothing was off limits. Jones came to listen, answer questions, and talk about solutions. He shared his plans to save rural hospitals, lower health care costs, and make the government answer to the people instead of the powerful. The conversation covered Tommy Tuberville's record in the Senate, the residency questions following his opponent, Medicaid expansion, and what the May primary numbers are telling Alabama Democrats about November.</p><p>On Tuberville's six years in Washington, Jones was clear. "He consistently embarrasses the state," Jones said. "He has not had any major legislation at all that helps the state of Alabama or the country, for that matter."</p><p>On why voters across the state are paying attention, Jones pointed to what people are feeling at home. "People are hurting. People are seeing their gas prices, their electricity prices, their grocery prices, health care — all of that is on the table," he noted.</p><p>When host Elise Jordan asked whether his campaign would formally challenge Tuberville's eligibility under Alabama's residency requirements, Jones was clear that his campaign would not be leading that fight — but made no mistake about the reality on the ground.</p><p>"Everybody in Alabama knows he's really not a resident of the state of Alabama," Jones said. "We've not had a governor or even any statewide officeholder that has been a champion of expanding Medicaid," Jones added. He committed to making it a day-one priority under his administration, calling it long overdue for rural communities across the state.</p><p>On momentum, the May 19th primary numbers told their own story. Democratic ballots doubled compared to 2022, while Republican turnout dropped by 25% despite millions spent on contested primary races.
