ABOUT DOUG JONES

Introductory photo

Doug Jones is the Democratic candidate for Governor of Alabama, a lifelong Alabamian whose career has been defined by public service, integrity, and a deep commitment to helping people across his home state. Born in Fairfield, Alabama, Doug is the son of a steelworker and a homemaker. He grew up understanding the dignity of hard work, the importance of community, and the value of treating people with fairness and respect — lessons instilled in him by his parents and by the close-knit neighborhoods of Jefferson County.

Doug attended the University of Alabama, where he earned his undergraduate degree before going on to graduate from Samford University’s Cumberland School of Law. From the beginning of his career, he was drawn to public service. He served as staff counsel to U.S. Senator Howell Heflin on the Senate Judiciary Committee, gaining firsthand experience in the legislative process and working on issues affecting Alabama families. After his time in Washington, Doug returned home to Alabama to practice law, staying rooted in the communities that shaped him.

Doug’s commitment to justice led him to serve as United States Attorney for the Northern District of Alabama. In that role, he took on some of the most difficult and consequential cases in the state’s history. Most notably, decades after the tragic 1963 bombing of the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church in Birmingham that killed four young girls, Doug reopened the case and successfully prosecuted two former Ku Klux Klan members responsible for the crime.

His work delivered long-overdue justice to the victims’ families and to the state, demonstrating his belief that justice should have no expiration date. As U.S. Attorney, he also focused on public corruption, violent crime, health care fraud, and protecting consumers — always working to uphold the rule of law and keep Alabama communities safe.

His victory reflected a broad coalition of Alabamians who believed in decency, bipartisanship, and putting people over politics. In the Senate, Doug earned a reputation as a pragmatic, solutions-oriented lawmaker willing to work across party lines to deliver results for his state.

He supported efforts to expand access to broadband in rural communities, recognizing its importance for education, health care, and economic growth. Doug worked to protect and restore veterans’ benefits, advocating for improved health services and resources for Alabama’s large veteran population. He backed funding for infrastructure projects critical to the state’s ports, roads, and waterways, helping position Alabama for long-term growth.

Doug also prioritized protecting civil rights and voting rights, drawing on both his personal history and Alabama’s history to guide his work. He supported legislation to strengthen protections against discrimination and to ensure equal access to the ballot box. In addition, he worked on health care issues important to Alabama families, including protecting coverage for people with pre-existing conditions and supporting efforts to lower prescription drug costs.
